From our Vice President Ho-Sheng Hsiao

Ho-Sheng Hsiao
369's program is aimed towards high school and college aged youth. The skills taught range from very basic UNIX (how to use shell, etc.) to advanced (networking, programming, etc.). We're well-known enough to receive equipment donations from major companies that exposes our youth members to technical stuff not available in College.

Our goal is to help our youth members achieve their goals. This may or may not be a career in system administration.

More importantly, we're a youth mentoring program. We have an unique leadership training program as it applies to a career in system administration. This includes lectures, books, materials,

teaching-by-example, and a "leadership lab": because we're a Venturing Crew, our members can apply those principles first hand. :-) This includes activities such as team contest (who can take a broken AT&T UNIX servers and bring it up and running first), to outdoor camps, and most importantly of all, make new friends.

Our adult leaders include some of the top UNIX system administrators in central Ohio. For example, during his stint at AT&T, Mr. Corder redesigned the global communications network; Mr. Drake is currently the Chief Technologist of the International Holdings Group at Nationwide Insurance; Mr. Potter is one of the co-authors of the O'Reilly Perl 5 book.

The members who stay in our program for a year or more get the most benefits: career opportunities, being able to talk with the top system administrators in central Ohio. In turn, we have a great start in earning positive character references vital for a career in system administration ... The major theme is leadership training, which system administration is an application. Hence, we combine that with outdoor skills that require teamwork and leadership.

There is a regular OSU group that heads out each week.

From our Secretary Heather A. Ward

My name is Heather Ward and I'm a Biology major at OSU. I can honestly say I've learned more from the group than all my classes this year combined. Our first course is UNIX for Programmers. We meet at the Reformation Lutheran Church on S. Hamilton Rd. in Whitehall. We meet between the hours of 7:30 and 9:00 on Tuesday nights. The cost of the group is $25 registration when you apply. As far as the duration of the program, it will be going through the summer, and anyone is welcome to continue with it into the school year. If you are interested, please don't hesitate to send an email to exp369@www.venturingbsa.com, or my personal email, ward.336@osu.edu. Our web page also has a lot of information about the group as well. http://www.venturingbsa.com. We are also hosting an Open House on June 13th at 7:30. I look forward to hearing from you in the future!
